Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC)

In the past quarter-century, the virus has claimed the lives of more than 20 million people and lowered average life expectancy in the hardest-hit countries by as much as 30 years. Millions of children are missing parents, siblings, schooling, health care, basic protection and many of the other fundamentals of childhood because of the toll the disease is taking. Only 5% of HIV-positive children get medical help; and fewer than 10% of the 15 million already orphaned by AIDS get financial support.  Recent statistics estimate that there are approximately 2 million orphaned children in Zambia and 1 million orphaned children in Malawi. Nearly 76.5% of all orphaned children have resulted from the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In addition to the hight level of HIV infection rate, about 80-90% of the Zambian and Malawian population live in poverty. It is critical that the world unite for children and unite against AIDS.

The pandemic has caused a global concern for the future of our children and we ask for your continuous support not to overlook in the children in the global fight against HIV and AIDS. For more information on orphan care activities, please see a list of activities in Malawi and in Zambia.
